A MULTI-MILLION pound investment in Renfrewshire that could bring hundreds of jobs to the area has been welcomed.

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) has unveiled plans for Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace firm, to carry out research and development work at Westway Park, in Renfrew.

The £12million deal will see the company work with the University of Strathclyde on research into state-of-the-art engineering and look for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of construction.

Work at the site, which is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMID), is expected to begin later this year, with Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Gavin Newlands describing the deal as “a great boost for our local economy.”

He said: “High-skilled, high-value jobs are key to our industrial success and Boeing’s decision to set up shop here is a tribute to the skills already in Renfrewshire.

“This news shows the value of the partnerships being set up within the AMID by our research sector, with the University of Strathclyde working with Boeing to bring this exciting venture about.

“I hope this is only the beginning of Boeing’s presence in Renfrewshire and marks another milestone in the progress of Renfrewshire’s AMID.”

Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson also welcomed the deal.

He said: “Manufacturing is a vitally important sector for the local, regional and national recovery from coronavirus and we are delighted to see the Boeing project taking shape.

“Developing Scotland’s home for manufacturing innovation is progressing well and I am sure many more companies will be attracted by our unique environment, designed to foster collaboration and provide access to the latest manufacturing technologies and cutting-edge research.”
