A CITY centre opticians has warned that your wider health and wellbeing could be put at risk due to missed eye tests during lockdown.

Millions of people have missed out on vital eye examinations since March - which could pose threat your eyesight and wider health.

A city centre optician is now warning Glaswegians not to delay your next check-up, as she outlines 50 per cent of sight loss is unavoidable if detected early on.

Sarah Freel, store director for Specsavers Sauchiehall Street, said: "Fifty percent of sight loss is avoidable with early detection, however, during the pandemic many people may not have had access to these diagnostic tests.

"Not only does this mean their eyesight is at risk but potentially other aspects of their health too."

While we can detect deterioration in our vision ourselves, Sarah warns there are changes in our eyes that could spark signs of wider health implications that can only be spotted during an eye test.

She said: "While there are several changes we may notice in our vision which could be a sign of a wider health condition, there are also some things that can only be detected during an eye test.

"It is important to make an appointment with your optometrist if you are seeing certain things, such as persistent floaters, or notice changes with your eyes such as blurred vision or yellowing of the eyes.

"However, it is also important to keep up your regular eye checks – even if you don’t think there is anything wrong with your vision – because something could be happening which you are completely unaware of.

"We recommend getting your eyes checked every two years and, as tests are free through the NHS in Scotland, there really is no reason to delay."

The local opticians has shared five things to look out for that could indicate risks to your health: Red spots and blood vessels,  persistent floaters, blue ring, a yellow tinge and blurred vision.

Health conditions such as Glaucoma, Diabetic retinopathy,  high blood pressure, Arthritis and tumours can be recognised by your local optician through an eye test.
