A FIRE at a back court of a block of flats in Priesthill has caused concern for local residents.

Police Scotland confirmed the blaze that took place at the Barratt Circle flats on Monday night was deliberate.

Local councillor David McDonald said he was horrified to learn about the latest anti-social behaviour.

He said: “This area has been subject to an agreed process to improve the buildings and local environment over the last few years involving the council, residents and other local partners.

“Despite this, the area continues to be a target for people determined to wreck that progress. This behaviour is criminal and a serious risk to the residents.”

Mr McDonald added that there have been a few similar incidents recently, which tend to take place in the communal bin areas.

He added: “We managed to get £5million put into improving the buildings including controlled entrance systems and re-cladding of the outside.

“There has been lots of progress made but lockdown grounded it to a halt and there has been a re-emergence of anti-social behaviour.

“Lots of residents are really scared and worried that all the progress that’s been made will be lost. There is a lot of anger.

“Residents want to be ensured that the police are doing what they can to track those responsible - there’s only so much people can put up with.”

Police Scotland confirmed that enquiries are ongoing after the fire at 8.30pm on Monday night.

The spokeswoman added: “The fire is being treated as wilful and anyone with information should call 101 quoting 3560 of Monday 21 September.”

Meanwhile, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said one appliance was sent to the scene.

A spokeswoman added: “Firefighters extinguished the fire and left after ensuring the area was made safe. There were no reported casualties.”
