THE UK's coronavirus alert level should be raised from level three to four, according to the country's chief medical officers have said.

The new figure means transmission is "high or rising exponentially".

It comes after the UK Government's scientific adviser warned there could be 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October without further action.

Boris Johnson is expected to make a statement in the Commons on Tuesday.

Nicola Sturgeon is to set out the additional curbs in a statement to Holyrood on Tuesday or Wednesday. She said she has been "frustrated" by a lack of clarity from the UK Government

On Monday, a further 4368 daily cases were reported in the UK, up from 3899.
