AN East End schoolgirl has been chosen as an ambassador for Scotland’s sporting body.

Smithycroft Secondary pupil Holly Halferty will represent sportscotland in her bid to inspire the next generation of leaders.

She will be joined by 15-year-old Carrie Martin in leading a team who will help develop resources and training to influence new and existing young ambassadors for the year ahead, as well as supporting those delivering local sport.

The 17-year-old Riddrie girl said: “I’m really pleased to be part of the delivery team.

"I hope I can help the Young Ambassadors understand how big a difference they can make in their role.”

Kilsyth Academy pupil Carrie added: “I would like to inspire and motivate all young people including those who feel disadvantaged because of mental or physical hurdles to take part in sport. I hope that I can show others that they can make a difference.”

Stewart Harris, sportscotland Chief Executive, said: “Congratulations to the 32 young people who have been selected for our 2020 delivery team. It is a programme we are very proud that has helped develop young people for eight years and wouldn’t be possible without the National Lottery and lottery players.

“Clearly this has clearly been an extremely difficult time for people across Scotland. But it is heartening to see so many young people coming together to try to help and inspire others.

“Becoming a Young Ambassador is a great way to develop new skills, build confidence and meet like-minded people in sport,

“We encourage our Young Ambassadors to motivate others to get into sport, helping shape decisions to ensure youngsters have the best possible sporting experience across Scotland.”
