SLEEPY residents in a Johnstone street are demanding action to silence a neighbour’s cockerel that keeps waking them up at the crack of dawn.

An official complaint has been lodged with Renfrewshire Council in a bid to get rid of the noisy rooster, which is making life a misery for families in Lilybank Wynd.

One fed-up resident who moved into the neighbourhood two years ago told The Gazette the cockerel, which is kept in a hut in the garden of a house in nearby Brewery Street, regularly provides an unwanted early morning alarm call.

“Most mornings, I hear a high-pitched ‘cock-a-doodle-doo,’ which usually starts at 3am, and it can last for hours,” said the resident, who asked not to be named.

“It’s been disrupting my family’s sleep and the neighbours I have spoken to about it have similar complaints.”

When contacted by The Gazette, the cockerel’s owner said it performs a pest control role by keeping predators away from chickens that share the same garden.

“For as long as I’ve been living here, I’ve had no-one say anything to myself about the noise,” said the owner, who also asked not to be identified.

“Before we were given the cockerel seven years ago, our next door neighbour had it and they received no complaints whatsoever either.

“Now that we know there have been complaints, we will look into rehousing the cockerel or other possible options if it is causing upset among residents.

“However, in these current circumstances, it’s quite difficult to rehouse a cockerel.”

A council spokesman confirmed it has received a complaint about the cockerel.

He said: “We have provided the complainer with the appropriate advice they need to progress this, including providing a noise diary to record instances of nuisance noise which will assist in our consideration of action under noise enforcement legislation.

“Our officers will continue to investigate this complaint and take any appropriate action required.”
