A YOUNG entrepreneur from Johnstone is using the magic of the movies to spread some cheer during the coronavirus crisis.

Callum Campbell, 25, will stage a series of drive-in cinema nights next week, giving film buffs the chance to enjoy classic flicks from the comfort of their own cars.

He decided to set up the screenings at Skyport Park and Ride, in Burnbrae Drive, between Elderslie and Linwood, after a number of student boxing events he had planned for March were cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Callum told The Gazette: “It was looking quite bleak in terms of organising events for later in the year but I noticed drive-in cinemas were popping up down south and there weren’t many in Scotland.

“I made some Facebook pages and events which managed to garner some interest and then I got some venues on board.

“I want to provide a bit of entertainment for people because we’ve all been locked up for weeks and weeks on end.”

A different film will be shown at 9.15pm each night from Monday, July 27, to Saturday, August 1, and moviegoers will be able to listen to the audio through their car radio.

Among the blockbusters lined up are Joker, Mamma Mia and Toy Story.

Events organiser Callum will also be offering a selection of drive-in movie snacks, including popcorn, burgers, hot dogs and fries.

The former St Anthony’s Primary pupil said: “I wanted to offer a mix of films, so there’s a bit of something for everyone. For example, there’s Toy Story and The Lion King for the kids, there are blockbusters such as Joker and Braveheart, and Grease is there to pay homage to drive-in cinemas.

“There will be food available, which can be delivered to your car, and there will also be toilets on site.

“Covid-19 measures will be in place, such as washing your hands before going into the toilet, socially distancing when queuing and so on.

“I don’t know when my next events are going to be, so I hope to fill as many of the screenings to capacity as possible.”
