AN East Renfrewshire couple who have been married for more than half a century enjoyed an emotional reunion as they saw each other for the first time since lockdown.

Norman Thomson was able to sit with his wife Sandra in the garden of the care home where she is a resident, just days after their 55th wedding anniversary.

The reunion at Whitecraigs Care Home, in Thornliebank, was made possible as coronavirus restrictions were eased, allowing loved ones to meet outdoors for the first time since March.

Days earlier, and with restrictions still in place, the couple, who are both in their mid-seventies, had to celebrate their anniversary through a window at the home.

Norman said being reunited with Sandra was “marvellous.”

“Obviously I would love to be with her but this is the first step. I’m looking forward to next time,” he added.
Amanda Randou, activities co-ordinator at the home, which is run by Renaissance Care, said: “Sandra really enjoyed getting to reconnect with Norman.

“Visits are going great here. It’s lovely to see our residents reconnecting with their loved ones.

“It is challenging, as it’s a different type of visit, but it’s a step forward.”

Keeping loved ones connected has been a focal point for Renaissance Care since the start of the pandemic.

The company purchased iPads for each of its 15 care homes and maintained strong communication with relatives. It is also kitting out each home with industrial-strength air purifiers in preparation for a return to indoor visiting.
