TWO men have been reported to the procurator fiscal after a car and a van were set on fire in Rosneath a fortnight ago.

Police were called to reports of two incidents in the village’s Clachan Road at around 3.15am on Monday, June 8: one of a vehicle on fire, and the other a domestic incident nearby.

On arriving at the scene, police found a Mercedes van and a Toyota Yaris both in flames; firefighters extinguished both blazes, and the owners of the two vehicles were identified.

An initial investigation by the senior fire officer on the scene found that one of the vehicles had been deliberately set on fire.

Officers dealing with the domestic incident had already arrested a 36-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, both from Rosneath, on suspicion of theft.

A 60-year-old Helensburgh man was identified as a suspect in connection with the fire-raising; he, too, was arrested, and all three were taken to Clydebank police office for further enquiries.

The man and woman were both charged with the theft of a quantity of cash, and were released to appear in court on a later date.

However, after police carried out local enquiries, including interrogation of CCTV footage, the same 36-year-old man, and the 60-year-old man from Helensburgh, were both identified as suspects in connection with wilful fire-raising on both of the vehicles.

The full cost of the damage has yet to be ascertained.
