A CARING teenager is using pedal power to generate funds for older people in need.

Shreyas Nekkare, 14, has set himself the challenge of cycling 100km over 10 days in support of Age Scotland.

Scotland’s national charity for older people said it has been “overwhelmed and inspired” by the number of younger people voicing concerns about the impact of coronavirus on those who are older.

Asked why he decided to support Age Scotland, Shreyas told the Barrhead News: “In this unexpected, long pandemic, I felt older and more vulnerable people were the worst hit and that every little help would be appreciated.

“It would feel as if I have been able to do something for my grandparents living far away in India.”

Brian Sloan, Age Scotland’s chief executive, is full of praise for Shreyas, who lives in Newton Mearns.

He said: “The generosity, kindness and compassion shown by fundraisers like Shreyas has been amazing during what has undoubtedly been a difficult time for many older people.

“I would like to say a massive thank-you to Shreyas from all of us at Age Scotland. His efforts will help ensure we can provide information, advice and friendship to each older person who needs it."
