A CYCLIST has suffered serious injuries after he was stabbed by a gang of thugs in Kilbarchan last night.

The victim and a friend had been cycling on a path near Nether Johnstone Small Holdings, in Milliken Road, at around 10.30pm when the attack took place.

They were approached by a group of up to eight men and subjected to a violent assault, which police say appears to have been unprovoked.

A 37-year-old man suffered a number of serious injuries, including stab wounds, and was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, for treatment.

His 29-year-old friend suffered facial injuries and was also taken to the RAH for treatment but has since been released.

Detective Inspector Ian Ross, of Renfrewshire CID, told The Gazette: "This attack appears to have been unprovoked and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible.

"Anyone who was in the area on Wednesday evening and may have seen or heard a disturbance or who has any other information is urged to come forward.

"Anyone who can help our enquiries can call 101, quoting incident 4,285 of May 27, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
