ALL five of Renfrewshire’s recycling tips will reopen on June 1, council chiefs have confirmed.

But residents looking to get rid of bulk rubbish they’ve been holding onto during the Covid-19 lockdown will be faced with a number of new restrictions.

For the first two weeks of June, people will only be able to get rid of bagged household waste and will have to continue to keep garden items, metals and electrical equipment.

Meanwhile, the sites in Linwood and Paisley will be the only ones to reopen seven days a week until at least late June.

Paisley’s Underwood Road hub will be open from 8.30am to 6pm every day, while the tip in Linwood’s Middleton Road will have the longest opening hours, from 8am to 6pm.

Others across the region will only be open on set days from 8am to 6pm.
The Erskine site, in Barrhill Road, will open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, while the Miller Street hub in Johnstone will allow people in on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Residents using the Haining Road site in Renfrew, which will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, should enter via Dean Park Road.

To begin with, the number of vehicles allowed in each site at any one time will be limited and people will only be allowed to visit in cars, with access for trailers and vans to be reviewed later in June.

People will be asked to follow a single file queue.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Renfrewshire’s infrastructure, land and environment convener, said: “We’ve been working closely with the Scottish Government and Cosla (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) to ensure that, when it was safe to reopen recycling centres, we were ready to implement the safety measures required.

“These will include only allowing a limited number of cars into the site at any one time, ensuring physical distancing is in place at all times and undertaking a strict cleaning programme.

“From June 1, you will be able to visit a recycling centre but please only do so if it is essential and to dispose of any excess bagged waste you may have.

“The health and safety measures are in place to keep us all safe, so please respect our staff who are there to assist you and continue to follow the health advice to protect yourself and our teams at all times.”

Garden waste, scrap metal and small amounts of rubble will be accepted at all the sites from June 15 and, from June 22, visitors can get rid of cookers, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.

All other electrical items, such as TVs and fridges, will be accepted from June 29.

Council bosses have said anyone who visits the tips must be able to remove waste from their car and place it into the skips, as staff will not be able to help due to social distancing restrictions.

Temporary signs will be erected to direct residents to the centres and people will be required to show proof of residency and photo ID.
