POLICE are urging East Renfrewshire residents to make sure their home is properly secured after two men were arrested following separate thefts over the weekend.

The first incident took place in Waterside Drive, Newton Mearns, at around 2.30pm on Friday.

Sergeant Michael Morgenthaler, based at Giffnock police office, said: “We received a report of a suspect who had attended at a home and had then been observed by a witness going into other properties, acting suspiciously and allegedly removing property from a garden shed.

“Police officers attended and traced him shortly thereafter and he was found in possession of stolen property, which included a bicycle and gardening tools.”

The 40-year-old man is expected to appear in court at a later date.

In a separate incident, a 47-year-old man was arrested following a ‘sneak-in theft’ at a ground-floor flat in Fenwick Road, Giffnock, at 11pm on Saturday.

Sgt Morgenthaler added: “A resident on Fenwick Road was awoken by a noise and a suspect was seen leaving through the patio doors. This was reported to the police.

“Around two hours later, officers on patrol in Kilmarnock Road stopped the suspect and, following a search, he was found to be in possession of stolen property linked to the crime.

"He will appear at court at a later date.”
