A LIFEGUARD is getting into the swim of things as he takes on a new role helping people on the frontline in the battle against the coronavirus outbreak.

Jordi Costa, who works at Neilston Leisure Centre, was left with some spare time on his hands as the swimming pool is currently closed due to the ongoing lockdown.

Now he is putting that spare time to good use as a volunteer driver for the home care service in Barrhead.

Jordi, 53, drives care workers to appointments in the local area as they provide meals and much-needed company to elderly and vulnerable residents, as well as providing services such as medical administration, mobility assistance and respite care.

“My job as a lifeguard at Neilston Leisure Centre is to look after others and I want to continue to do that at the moment,” said Jordi, who is originally from Spain and works for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure.

“You never know, your actions could also save a life.

“I love to have the opportunity to look after others and it’s especially important at this time. The elderly are confined to their home and it’s important that their carers can still be carrying out their essential work.

“I help them get where they need to be so they can support as many people as possible.

“While the leisure centre is currently closed, I am happy to continue to help people in any way I can.”

Jordi, who lives in Neilston, is also a qualified volunteer walk leader with the Paths for All charity, a member of the Neilston Walkers Group and an online mindfulness life coach for English and Spanish speakers.

Robert Hammond, of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, is full of praise for Jordi and other volunteers who are giving up their time to help people.

He said: “During the initial crisis phase, we saw an amazing response from our staff to volunteer to support their local communities.

“Jordi is an excellent example of that and is one of many of our staff supporting the various community efforts. These include supporting key worker education hubs, the local food hubs, driving and assisting with shielding calls.

“We are very proud of how quickly staff mobilised to provide that support.”
