A CARING schoolgirl has used her love of writing to thank frontline workers for their heroic efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Emily Harvey, a pupil at Neilston Primary, penned a poem called ‘This is for the NHS.’

The young wordsmith was inspired by the dedication of NHS staff, including her mum Gayle, who is a dental nurse at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley.

Emily, 11, told the Barrhead News: “My teacher gave us the option of different types of games to play or something else and I chose to write the poem.

“I was inspired by all of tThe NHS workers and how they have been helping everyone and saving so many lives since the pandemic started. It is so amazing. Before this, people thought they were just there for helping people when they were sick but now I think everyone has now realised how much we really do need them. They are such a big part of our lives.

Barrhead News:

“My mum works for the NHS and she inspires me a lot. I’m really proud of what I wrote.”
Gayle, 43, admits there were tears in her eyes when she read the poem.

“I thought it was fantastic,” she said. “I was very touched by it.”.

Emily’s poem highlights the admiration she has for the NHS, adding that “not all heroes wear capes.”

It reads:

This is for the NHS, a little poem for you. We really love and admire everything that you do.

You’re out there every day, saving people’s lives, for mothers, brothers, husbands or wives.

We clap you every Thursday night at eight, just a small way to show you how much we appreciate.

People are out shouting and clapping their hands, we see pipers, fireworks and some have pots and pans.

Wow! For over 70 years you’ve been at our side, giving support and taking it all in your stride.

On the frontline providing great care, it’s so reassuring to have you all there.

You do all you do with a smile and positive attitude, we just want to take the time to express to you our gratitude.

Knowing you’re always there through thick and through thin, it makes us know that, against the vicious virus, we’ll win.

In times like these, not all heroes wear capes. A smile, a word and an action is sometimes all it takes.

So we put up our rainbows and hearts that are blue. Oh, and just one more thing…a massive thank-you.
