MORE than £2,500 has been raised to help an East Renfrewshire school produce protective face shields for frontline workers.

Neilston Primary set up a JustGiving page, with a target of £1,500, to fund the purchase of plastic reels that are being used on the school’s 3D printer to make the safety equipment for NHS staff.

And the fundraising target was quickly smashed, with more than 130 people donating money.

A spokesman for the school said: “We want to do our bit to help all of our friends, families and colleagues working in the NHS stay safe during this challenging time.

“With approved designs from the NHS, we are busy using our school 3D printer to create much-needed visors.

“This will protect NHS staff so they can continue their wonderful work. The money will be used to purchase the reels of specialist plastic required to undertake the printing. The more we raise, the more visors we can make.”

The team at Neilston Primary are following the example set by design and technology teachers at St Luke’s High, Barrhead High, Eastwood High and Mearns Castle High who have made thousands of face shields for NHS staff, healthcare workers and the police.
