THE number of positive cases of coronavirus in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde continues to increase as the Scottish death toll rose to 126.

New figures just released by the Scottish Government show the health board's numbers rose from 632 to 682 overnight.

The health board is responsible for care in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.

There remains a huge increase in the number of cases in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde than in other surrounding health boards.

At the Scottish Government's daily media briefing, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said there had been “significant” steps taken to get personal protective equipment (PPE) to health workers.

Health Protection Scotland (HPS) would also be issuing new guidance on how PPE is distributed, she added.

Ms Sturgeon was also clear on what testing “can and cannot achieve”.

Current tests, she said, could identify cases of Covid-19, but would be unable to detect the virus in the incubation period or if someone has previously had the virus.

The Scottish and UK governments are currently working on a more thorough antibody test.

A previous version of this article contained the headline “Coronavirus: Number of confirmed cases rises to 682 in NHS GGC with 50 more deaths overnight”. To clarify, 50 deaths did not occur overnight. Rather, 50 deaths were confirmed overnight after delays in reporting deaths over the previous few days.
