MI5 has a new head spy and he’s from Glasgow.

The UK Government announced the new Director General of MI5 is Ken McCallum.

In his biography it is revealed he grew up in Glasgow and is a Glasgow University graduate.

Mr McCallum takes up his post at the end of April.

He has 25 years experience with the security services and was in charge of overseeing all counter-terror investigations in the run-up to, and during, the 2012 London Olympics.

The MI5 website states: “Ken grew up in Glasgow and holds a degree in Mathematics from Glasgow University.

“His out-of-work life is dominated by trying to be an active father. When work/parenting allows, he enjoys hiking in mountains.”

MI5 said Mr McCallum’s first ten years in the service was focussed on Northern Ireland-related terrorism, with his work contributing to the peace process remaining a career highlight.

Senior operational roles in countering Islamist extremist terrorism followed, and a period leading on cyber security, where he expanded MI5 engagement with the private sector.

Mr McCallum said: “MI5’s purpose is hugely motivating. Our people – with our partners – strive to keep the country safe, and they always want to go the extra mile.

Ms Patel said: “We are facing unprecedented national security threats and I’m confident that his experience and vision will allow the UK to meet those challenges head on.
