TWO police cars have been taken off the road after a brute smashed them up with a hammer during a senseless early morning raid.

The motors were parked outside Johnstone police station, in Church Street, when they were set upon by a man at around 12.10am on Saturday.

Police say the windows were destroyed by a vandal who then fled the scene before being caught outside Elderslie Golf Club later that morning.

They say he was found with a hammer and three knives.

A 28-year man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is due to appear in Paisley Sheriff Court today.
