A new Arnold Clark will soon be coming to Renfrewshire after planning permission was granted this week.

The dealership will be based in Mossland Road at Hillington Business Park on what is currently an area of vacant land alongside the M8.

Plans were given the green light by members of Renfrewshire Council’s communities, housing and planning policy board.

The development will consist of a showroom building to the east of the site, a valeting and repair building to the west alongside car parking areas, access and landscaping.

Just one objection was received from a neighbouring business which said the creation of a new dealership could increase traffic congestion, but Transport Scotland and the council’s director of environment and infrastructure insisted the development would not have a significant impact after Arnold Clark submitted a detailed transport assessment.

The objector also complained there was a lack of parking in Hillington Park, but documents presented to the board said the applicant demonstrated there would be sufficient parking provided.

Several pre-application discussions were undertaken between Arnold Clark and the council in relation to design, layout, access, connections, routes for pedestrians and cyclists, flooding and drainage and landscaping.

Documents presented to the board stated: “The site currently consists of a large vacant area of land, directly south of the westbound carriageway.

“The proposed use of the site for the erection of a car sales showroom is considered to comply with the policies of both the adopted and proposed Renfrewshire Local Development Plans.

“The main neighbouring use for the site is other vehicle sales premises, as such the use would not be incongruous within the area.

“The design of the proposed building is of a high standard, which is important given it’s prominent location on the M8 frontage.

“Given the adjoining and surrounding uses there is unlikely to be any significant or unacceptable impact on amenity.

“With regards to the objections received from a neighbouring business, regarding parking and traffic generation, these have been addressed.”

The showroom building will be two-storeys in height wit large sections of glazing to display vehicles.

The valeting and repair building will be single storey with roller shutter doors for vehicle access.

Land around the building will provide car parking for staff, customers and vehicles which are on display.

Planning chiefs have asked traffic control measures be introduced on Mossland Road to ensure vehicles can safely enter and exit the site as a condition of granting permission.
