A WARNING has been issued about bogus callers after an elderly Bridge of Weir man was scammed out of £720.

The 86-year-old victim, from the Ranfurly area of the village, was approached by three men who arrived at his home in a white van at around 3.15pm yesterday.

After the OAP gave them £720 to carry out roof repairs at his home, they demanded a further £500.

However, police were alerted by staff at the victim’s bank when he visited to withdraw the cash.

Renfrewshire residents are now being urged to remain alert to the risk of rogue traders ‘cold-calling’ at their home.

Inspector Kayley Teasdale said: “We are asking people to be wary of people turning up at their home without prior notice, offering to carry out work.

“The vast amount of reputable companies will not canvass door to door for business. The most common work that is offered when canvassing in this manner is roofing and gardening work.

“Residents should check the legitimacy of companies before agreeing to any work being carried out, such as looking up the company online or asking a family member for advice.

“Vulnerable people can often be targeted and I’m asking family and friends to remain vigilant and ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect people who could fall victim to these crimes."

Police said a similar incident took place in the Bridge of Weir area in January and are advising residents to call 101 if have any concerns about bogus callers.
