The European Union flag could be lowered at Renfrewshire Council HQ at the end of the month after a councillor tabled a motion requesting its removal.

Almost two weeks have passed since the UK left the EU, but the European flag has continued to be flown outside Renfrewshre House in Paisley because it can only be lowered if elected members vote for it.

The first chance councillors have to make a decision over the flag is on Thursday, February 27, at the next full council meeting.

And Councillor Neill Graham, who voted leave in the EU referendum, has now put forward a motion asking colleagues to agree to it being taken down.

The Conservative member for Paisley Northeast and Ralston said he believes it is time to show Renfrewshire residents councillors respect the result of the 2016 vote.

He said: “With the United Kingdom having now officially left the European Union, I believe it is only right we respectfully ask EU flags flown from council buildings to be lowered.

“For too long, the vote to leave was not properly respected, which was a real affront to the democratic process, including to the 35 per cent of voters in Renfrewshire who voted to leave.”

The EU flag currently stands alongside the Union flag and the Saltire outside the council buildings.

It has been suggested by some councillors the flag could be replaced with the Renfrewshire coat of arms or different emblems of towns in the area could be alternated.

If the motion receives backing from a majority of councillors, the flag will be lowered the following day on Friday, February 28, at 11am.

Cllr Graham has however asked members if they will support raising the flag on May 5 and 9 every year to mark Europe Day.

The Council of Europe observes the day on May 5, while the EU marks it on May 9.

Cllr Graham added: “We are leaving the European Union, not Europe, who will still be our friends and trading partners, which is why I think it is right that the flag would be raised on Europe Day in May each year, as well as when it is celebrated by the Council of Europe.

“I hope councillors can show a firm commitment we need to move on from Brexit by agreeing to my fair and respectful motion.”
