ASTHMA sufferers are being warned they face an increased risk of an attack as cold weather takes its toll.

With freezing temperatures hitting East Renfrewshire this week, Asthma UK is encouraging sufferers to seek help as soon as they notice their asthma symptoms getting worse.

The charity has said that, when cold air enters inflamed airways, it can cause them to spasm, resulting in coughing and shortness of breath.

Those affected are advised to wrap a scarf loosely around their nose and mouth to warm the air being inhaled.

Taking your inhaler as prescribed is also seen as essential.

Dr Andy Whittamore, of Asthma UK, said: “Winter can be a dangerous time of the year for people with asthma, as plummeting temperatures can put them at risk of a life-threatening attack.

“It is essential you make sure you’re taking all your medicines as prescribed and watch for signs your asthma is getting worse, so you see your GP urgently and cut your risk of a potentially-fatal asthma attack.”
