A NEW £10-a-week payment being brought in by the Scottish Government to help poorer families has been hailed as “a game-changer.”

Thousands of local families will benefit from the Scottish Child Payment, which will start being paid in December this year.

Social Security Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said it will be a key weapon in the fight against child poverty.

She added: “The Scottish Child Payment has rightly been described as game-changing in terms of the potential to reduce child poverty. That is why we are doing everything we can to introduce this as early as possible, whilst ensuring we do so in a way that protects implementation plans for the other social security benefits.”
