GOOD sports have come to the rescue of a Johnstone community hub that was in danger of becoming a no-go zone because of dangerous potholes.

The team in charge at the Johnstone Community Sports Complex, in Greenend Avenue, issued a plea for help to fix the deep craters on its access road.

And within a day of posting the appeal on Facebook, road construction company Finco Contracts had offered their services.

Mark McGee, treasurer of Johnstone Community Sports Complex, told The Gazette: “We are delighted that we’re going to get a longer lasting solution to the problem and are surprised at how quickly it all came together.

“It’s good to see the power of social media being used this way. It shows that people are listening and willing to support community groups and charities like ourselves when we’ve got specific problems that we need to deal with.

“It solves what has been one of the biggest problems we’ve had to try to solve. Hopefully, fixing the potholes will improve the whole environment around the centre and people won’t be put off coming here or booking events because of the condition of the road.

“It should alleviate any threat of people doing damage to their cars or any pedestrians potentially injuring themselves.”

Johnstone Community Sports Complex, on the site of the former McMaster Sports Centre, is a registered charity and offers weekly events and classes, including everything from Zumba sessions to a mother-and-toddler group.

The hub can also be hired by local sports clubs or booked for the likes of kids’ birthday parties.

A spokesperson for Beith-based Finco Contracts said the company is only too happy to lend a hand to Mark and his team by repairing the access road.

“It’s our pleasure to help Mark and the sports centre,” added the spokesperson.

“We are more than willing to provide our services to help out if it’s going to improve the situation.”

Repair work is still in its early stages but staff at the sports centre hope to have the access road in good condition in the near future.
