EAST Renfrewshire motorists face weeks of delays as a project to upgrade the gas network under a busy road resumes.

Gas distribution company SGN is investing £180,000 to replace the existing metal gas main in Fenwick Road, Giffnock, with new plastic pipes as part of an ongoing programme of "essential" work developed with the Health and Safety Executive.

Work will resume on Friday, February 7, and last around four weeks.

Braidholm Road will be closed at its junction with Fenwick Road for two weeks, with motorists being diverted via Fenwick Road and Merrylee Park Avenue.

Braidholm Road will be reopened on Friday, February 21, but the final two weeks of work will involve a small lane closure in Fenwick Road, to allow engineers to work safely.

Brendan Reid, SGN project manager, said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work and we will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential work in Fenwick Road.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating but the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that, once the work is completed, Giffnock homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
