HELENSBURGH'S lifeboat crew joined in the search for a man reported missing in the Clyde at the weekend.

The RNLI crew was joined by a helicopter from HM Coastguard, along with police launches and other vessels, after a man in a small tender was reported missing in the Cardwell Bay area, off Gourock, at 11.35pm on Saturday.

While en route to the scene, a report was received that two people in another tender were missing in the same area.

The two occupants of the second tender were picked up by the lifeboat crew at 11.50pm after they and their tender were found attached to a mooring buoy; the crew was told the two people were related to the first missing man and had been searching for him.

Coastguard teams from Kilcreggan and Greenock, and the Ministry of Defence Police and Police Scotland, also took part in the search in "challenging" weather conditions.

The lifeboat crew was changed in the course of the night before being stood down by the coastguard at 3.55am, with no trace of the missing man having been found.

The lifeboat returned to the water at 10.50am to carry out a search of the shore between Cardross and Rhu, but nothing was found.

HM Coastguard opted to halt the search after darkness fell on Sunday after no trace of the missing man was found by the emergency services, following a search of both the north and south shorelines of the Clyde as far up-river as the Erskine Bridge area.

The callout was the second of the weekend for the Helensburgh lifeboat, which was launched at 7.42pm on Friday at the request of the police after a woman was reported to have been seen unsteady on her feet near a set of steps leading to the water at Margaret Street in Greenock.

The lifeboat and coastguard helicopter searched the area from 7.50pm, but no trace of the woman was found, and the lifeboat was stood down at 8.54pm.
