BARRHEAD became Tinsel Town on Saturday as the festive season arrived in spectacular fashion.

Crowds turned out to enjoy all the festivities and give a hearty welcome to Santa, who was greeted by scores of young fans in his grotto as the season of goodwill started officially.

With the celebrations falling on St Andrew’s Day, the event was appropriately named ‘An Awfy Scottish Winter Wonderland’ and the local pipe band added a stirring sight as they marched ahead of the Santa train.

Highlights of the day were the official lights switch-on and the spectacular fireworks display, while the music, crafts, pony rides, Christmas cinema and much more were very popular.

Andy Dunlop, of event organisers All About Barrhead, said: “It was very cold but, despite this, a lot of people came out to enjoy the occasion.

“Our thanks go to the 149 local businesses who contributed to making the day a success and to the townsfolk who came out in force.

“Now we can’t wait for our next big event, the All About Barrhead Awards on Friday, March 6, for which nominations are already open.”
