THE SNP are being tipped to win back East Renfrewshire from the Conservatives at the General Election, a Barrhead News poll has found.

The survey suggested our readers intend to back Kirsten Oswald, who lost her seat to Paul Masterton in 2017, in next month’s vote.

Our latest survey of readers’ views found nearly half said they intend to vote for Nicola Sturgeon’s party.

Meanwhile, 33 per cent intend to vote Conservative, represented again by Mr Masterton, and just eight per cent said they would put their ‘X’ next to Labour candidate Carolann Davidson.

The poll suggests Mr Masterton’s vote share could fall by some six per cent from the 2017 General Election, when he defeated Ms Oswald.

The Liberal Democrats are backed to come fourth with seven per cent of the vote, which would be the party’s biggest share since Gordon MacDonald in 2010.

The poll of more than 1,000 readers also found three per cent would back the Brexit Party, but this is irrelevant in East Renfrewshire as it failed to field a candidate after Paul Aitken, who was unveiled by Nigel Farage in August, pulled out.

David MacDonald, an Independent councillor for Clarkston, Netherlee and Williamwood, had announced his intention to run, but he also withdrew his nomination.

The survey suggests Ms Oswald could take home the biggest vote share claimed by any candidate in East Renfrewshire since Labour’s Jim Murphy got 50.8 per cent in 2010.

The poll, conducted between November 6 and 23, suggests a similar result to other analysis, including that by political consultancy Electoral Calculus, which suggested Ms Oswald would pip Mr Masterton to the seat.
