THE Neilston community has been singing the praises of its newest star.

Ten-year-old schoolgirl Ruby Dailly is the pride of her village after starring in the new Christmas advert from John Lewis, which hit screens across the UK last week.

Ruby and her exuberant young dragon friend, Excitable Edgar, have signalled the start of the festive season for millions of viewers since the clip was released last week.

Nearly eight million people have watched the clip on YouTube as the Neilston Primary pupil comes to Edgar’s aid after he almost derails festivities in his fire-breathing excitement.

Barrhead News:

The 10-year-old was discovered after John Lewis conducted castings in London, Manchester and Scotland.

Gerard Curley, Neilston Primary’s head teacher, said: “It’s fantastic for Ruby to be involved in this advert and we’re all delighted for her.

“The whole school is so excited about her starring role alongside Excitable Edgar, and it has certainly brought some early Christmas spirit to Neilston Primary.”

Ruby’s proud dad Graham Dailly took to Facebook to express his delight at his daughter starring in the famous role.

He said: “My wee Rubstar, star of the show. So proud and happy for her.”

Ruby said: “He’s a friendly dragon ‘cause he’s pals with me.

“She keeps on being friends with the dragon, even though he sets everything on fire.

“He can’t help setting things on fire when he’s excited. He doesn’t mean to, so he gets sad whenever I’m mad at him.

“It’s been nice to work with everyone behind the scenes. It was fun.”

The advert is John Lewis’ first joint Christmas campaign with Waitrose and is a return to familiar territory for the retailer, which ended a decade of heart-warming tearjerkers featuring loveable animals and charming children last year with a star turn from Sir Elton John.
