Pupils at two Renfrewshire schools have been given crucial lessons on the dangers posed by building sites.

A safety expert from a major housebuilding company spoke about the risks around construction sites to youngsters from East Fulton Primary and Our Lady of Peace Primary, both in Linwood.

Ian Holden, site health and safety advisor at Taylor Wimpey West Scotland’s nearby Brooklands development, spoke about warning signs, building site machinery and the importance of wearing protective clothing.

He told The Gazette: “It was great to see the children’s interest in finding out how we build our new homes.

“At Taylor Wimpey, we are committed to working closely with the local communities that we build in.

“It is vital that we inform children in schools near our developments about the risks to look out for around our construction sites.”

Gillian Ward, headteacher at East Fulton Primary, said: “It’s great to see a company like Taylor Wimpey taking the time to talk to children about something that really matters.

“Ian did a great job of teaching our children about the importance of health and safety on a building site.

“The children took heed of the important messages he had to deliver and found the lessons very interesting.

“I’d like to thank him on behalf of everyone at East Fulton Primary.”

Graeme Mothersole, acting headteacher at Our Lady of Peace Primary, also heaped praised on Ian.

He said: “I was delighted to welcome the team from Taylor Wimpey into our school to highlight the dangers associated with children playing near any construction site.

“It’s been great to see Taylor Wimpey creating such an interactive and proactive approach to appeal to our pupils.”
