Customers at an East Renfrewshire shopping centre said ‘no thanks’ to plastic on Friday as they showed support for efforts to save the planet.
Staff at The Avenue, in Newton Mearns, gave away reusable hessian bags to shoppers who recycled a plastic bag in exchange.
‘Plastic Free Friday’ was another strand of the mall’s drive to cut down on the use of plastic.
Centre manager Michelle McCabe said: “Here at The Avenue we are committed to doing our bit for the environment. We gave away an incredible 1,100 reusable Avenue shopping bags on the day.
“Earlier this year, we received a suggestion from seven-year-old Petra, from Mearns Primary School, on how we could introduce more ways to encourage shoppers to recycle. We commend Petra for being environmentally aware and invited her along to help promote our #PlasticFreeFriday.”
Michelle said Asda Newton Mearns is already paving the way with its plastic bag recycling point, while many of the mall’s eateries have introduced reusable cups and removed plastic straws.
In addition, Optical Express offers contact lens recycling at The Avenue.
