A BARRHEAD travel firm is to step in to help Thomas Cook workers who lost their jobs following the company’s collapse.

A total of 100 new posts will be created by Barrhead Travel across its 34 UK stores to help former Thomas Cook employees.

Package holiday and airlines group Thomas Cook, which employed about 9,000 people in the UK, collapsed last month.

The demise of the 178-year-old firm left thousands of Scots stranded abroad or without holidays – and also caused heartache for loyal staff who were left without jobs.

Bosses at Barrhead Travel, which employs more than 1,000 staff, said it planned to reposition a team of people to meet with potential job candidates throughout the UK over the coming weeks.

Jacqueline Dobson, Barrhead Travel president, added: “We are keen to support industry colleagues from Thomas Cook.”

The company began life as a single store in Barrhead but is now one of the leading lights in the UK’s travel industry.

Last year, it was sold to North American firm Travel Leaders Group in a multi-million pound deal after more than four decades of operating independently.
