IMPROVEMENTS are to be made at a “problem” junction in a bid to ease congestion during rush hour.

A filter system will be installed at traffic lights on Greenock Road, Bishopton, for cars turning right into Ferry Road, which will eventually be followed by the introduction of a dedicated right filter lane.

The first stage of the works is planned for the coming weeks and will be funded by BAE Systems, which is overseeing the nearby Dargavel Village housing development.

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Derek Mackay has welcomed the move.

He said: “This has been a problem junction for a while, so I am pleased BAE are stepping in to try to address the situation.

“Congestion on Greenock Road is an issue which has been raised with me before, with traffic often being queued back along the road, stuck behind cars attempting to turn right into Ferry Road.

“I am confident that these proposals will make a difference.”

Greenock Road was recently resurfaced and it is hoped the filter light will further improve traffic flow for drivers trying to get around and through the village.

Councillor Natalie Don, who represents Bishopton on Renfrewshire Council, said: “It is great to hear that this work is going to be carried out.

“The request for a filter lane at these lights was originally raised with me by a constituent who was concerned about the time it takes to get through the lights at busy spells.

“I know that these concerns were echoed by the wider community, so I am extremely pleased to confirm this is going ahead.

“The recent resurfacing of Greenock Road will be a huge benefit to local drivers and now the implementation of this filter light will be another step in improving congestion and road safety in Bishopton.”
