THREE parks in East Renfrewshire are in the running to scoop a prize in a UK-wide competition.

Cowan Park in Barrhead, Rouken Glen in Giffnock and Shawwood Park in Newton Mearns have made it through to the finals of the Fields In Trust Best Park contest.

Residents in all three areas are now being invited to help choose a winner of the contest by voting for the one they think is most deserving of the award.

Paul Masterton, East Renfrewshire’s MP, is hoping one of the three in the region wins the title.

And he is urging the public to get involved by casting their votes.

He said: “It is fantastic news that three of East Renfrewshire’s beautiful parks have made it through to the finals of the Fields In Trust Best Park competition 2019.

“Voting closes on Monday, August 19, so make sure you support your favourite park.

“Rouken Glen Park actually won the title back in 2017, so let’s bring the title back to East Renfrewshire.”

Fields in Trust launched the competition by asking the public: “Do you love your local park?

“Is it a place your community comes together? Perhaps it is a place to unwind, somewhere to go for a run or play sport, or a space to explore with the kids.

“Whatever the reason your local green space is special to you, celebrate it with UK’s Best Park 2019.”

At the close of voting, the parks with the most votes in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be shortlisted in the final.

The overall winner of the competition will be announced in mid-September.
