AN MSP has pulled no punches in his praise for the continuing success of an East Renfrewshire club.

Tom Arthur lodged a motion at Holyrood highlighting the hard work and dedication of coaches, volunteers and members of Barrhead Amateur Boxing Club.

The MSP for Renfrewshire South recently met head coach Mark Breslin and volunteers to present them with the motion and congratulate them on receiving a £5,000 Awards for All grant from sportscotland.

The money will be used for new equipment required after the club’s move from East Renfrewshire Council premises to its own premises in Cogan Street in April.

Mr Arthur said: “It’s important to recognise the impact sporting opportunities, including those offered by Barrhead Amateur Boxing Club, have on people.

“As well as promoting a healthy lifestyle, they can be key in helping tackle child poverty and improving mental health.”

Mark Breslin, head coach, said: “It was great to showcase the new premises to Tom who genuinely appreciates and understands what the clubs aims and objectives are.

“The boxing club caters for our community and our doors are open to all.

“We keep our prices low in order that it is accessible to all where we build confidence, self-esteem and resilience to all our participants.

“The new premises has allowed us to expand and we are now able put on additional classes, including female only boxercise class on a Thursday night.”
