THE stage is set for Barrhead to host an innovative touring theatre production that is headed for the Edinburgh Fringe.
‘A Sign of Contradiction: The Passion Story’ is a dramatic new re-telling of the events surrounding the final days of Jesus Christ, written and directed by Barrhead man Stephen Callaghan and performed by a cast from AGAP Theatre.
Actors in modern-day costume bring alive the political hotbed of Roman-occupied first-century Judea as the hours count down to the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth.
The play had a highly-successful tour during the spring at the Archdiocese of Glasgow’s Lentfest and is now making a short summer tour that takes in Dundee and East Kilbride, as well as the Barrhead date, on the way to the Edinburgh Fringe next month.
Mr Callaghan told the Barrhead News: “I am delighted that we are able to bring the production to my home town.
“Unlike other plays that have sought to ‘update’ the story, we have tried to stay faithful to the historical context and the source material found in the Gospels, while finding a unique angle.”
Mr Callaghan is a playwright and director who, together with his wife Rachel, specialises in faith-based theatre.
His earlier plays include ‘The Margaret Sinclair Story,’ which wowed audiences when it was performed at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe.
‘A Sign of Contradiction: The Passion Story’ will be performed in the hall at St John’s Church, in Aurs Road, on Friday, July 19, starting at 7.30pm.
