VETERANS, military personnel and East Renfrewshire Council members gathered to mark Armed Forces Day.

Provost Jim Fletcher joined Lord Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy at the council’s headquarters in Giffnock on Monday to raise the flag and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces community.

Guests, including serving military personnel, veterans, elected members and members of the local community, were welcomed by Provost Fletcher, with Pipe Major Iain Grant, from 3rd Barrhead and District Pipe Band providing a fitting backdrop.

East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton and Eastwood MSP Jackson Carlaw also turned out to show their support.

The annual flag-flying ceremony allows the public to honour the contribution of the armed forces and recognise dedicated servicemen and women and their families, veterans and the cadet forces.

Provost Jim Fletcher said: “It was a real privilege to raise the flag and commemorate Armed Forces Day again this year.

“This national celebration gives us all the opportunity to express our enduring gratitude to and pride in the men and women of our armed forces.

“It is important that the contribution of our armed forces is never forgotten.
