ANDY Robertson completed his miraculous rise from high school in East Renfrewshire to world class footballer by winning the Champions League.

The former St Ninian's High pupil played the full 90 minutes as English giants Liverpool won their sixth European crown with a comfortable 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Robertson, 25, was playing for amateur side Queen's Park six years ago but is now viewed by many as one of the best defenders in world football.

Speaking after the triumph - which avenged Liverpool's defeat to Real Madrid 12 months ago - Robertson told the BBC: "I didn't know what to do with myself.

"There was a thousand things going through my head. To have that moment in front of the fans was just incredible and it's something we'll cherish.

"The trophy is heavier than I imagined. To get my hands on that cup was an incredibly special feeling.

"It's one I would hope to have again, but there's no guarantee of that."

Chiefs at East Renfrewshire Council wasted little time in congratulating the Giffnock lad as they posted a cheeky photo of him in his school uniform straight after the final whistle.

East Renfrewshire Provost Jim Fletcher said: "Huge congratulations to Andy Robertson from everyone in East Renfrewshire for this amazing achievement.

"To have won the Champions League and be captain of your country at the age of 25 is quite simply phenomenal.

"It has been exciting for everyone connected to St Ninian’s High to watch Andy’s meteoric rise in recent years and by winning the elite club competition in world football he joins an illustrious list of Scottish players to have done so.

"We are so proud of Andy’s achievements and wish him every success for his future career.”
