DETERMINED cyclists were out in force in East Renfrewshire to protest against “inconsiderate” motorists by handing out fake parking tickets.

The activists staged a pretend parking tickets hill climb race on the A77 Ayr Road on Saturday as part of a weekend of ‘Pedal on Parliament’ pop-up protests taking place across Scotland.

Riders delivered fliers to cars parked in the cycle lanes along the busy road, which read: “Don’t park in the cycle lane.

“These cycle lanes are the one almost safe haven for people cycling in East Renfrewshire. When you park in the cycle lanes, you force people on bikes into the faster-moving stream of traffic.

“This puts people in danger.”

More than 20 flyers were handed out in the space of an hour, with Chris Greenaway ‘winning’ the event in a time of 13 minutes, 50 seconds.

East Renfrewshire man Joel Cooney, who was among those taking part in the protest, said: “The A77 is one of the most heavily-cycled routes in East Renfrewshire and yet the people of Giffnock and Newton Mearns are poorly served by it.

“We can see great things happening just over the border in Glasgow and would welcome similar efforts coming from our own council. In the meantime, the least that could be done is keeping the lanes clear of cars.”
