AN East Renfrewshire school has been selected as a winner of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Pocket Garden competition.

Pupils across the country were challenged to create a garden design which will feature as part of a major display at this summer’s Gardening Scotland event, in Edinburgh.

And among those to impress the judges were youngsters at Our Lady of the Missions Primary, in Thornliebank.

Their winning design featured wetlands getting a helping hand from ‘natural engineers’ in the form of beavers who made a dam to help provide a perfect habitat for plants and animals.

Eve Keepax, food and environment officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “It is clear that pupils have managed to get really excited and thought a lot about these issues – exploring the relationship between food, the environment and biodiversity – all linking to our changing climate.

“We look forward to welcoming the pupils and staff from Our Lady of the Missions Primary School to Gardening Scotland and seeing the transformation from design to garden, from page to plant.”
