A TALENTED Barrhead schoolgirl really delivered when she took on the challenge of helping to design Scotland’s new baby box.

Hundreds of entries were received for a competition organised by Young Scot to come up with a suitable look for the boxes, which provide new mums with a variety of essentials they will need to start looking after their bundle of joy, such as a bib, travel changing mat and digital thermometer.

And among the five winners was St Luke’s High pupil Emily Wilson.

Between them, they came up with a design featuring iconic Scottish landmarks such as Ben Nevis, the Glenfinnan Viaduct and Edinburgh Castle.

Emily, 15, told the Barrhead News: “I loved thinking of different ideas and the illustration process before I decided on the one I would like to submit.

“I feel really proud of what I have achieved. It’s very special to be part of a gift that is given to every new baby born in our country.

“I love art, so being part of the illustration process of the baby box is an amazing thing I will take with me forever.

“I also think having this on my CV will have huge benefits to me when I apply for university and also when I enter the workplace.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Emily and the other winners were presented with prizes by Children’s Minister Maree Todd at the APS distribution centre, in Leith, where the baby boxes are printed, filled and sent out.

The rest of the team were Kilmacolm schoolgirl Holly Henry, Demi Burnett, from Macduff, Edith Macdonald, from Gleneagles, and Sonny Robertson, from Edinburgh.

Latest figures show a total of 80,873 baby boxes have been delivered across Scotland since they were launched in August 2017, including more than 20,000 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.

The demand for the boxes in the third quarter of 2018 from expectant parents stood at 96 per cent.

Renfrewshire South MSP Tom Arthur said: “I congratulate local pupil Emily Wilson on being part of the team who created the winning design.

“This is an excellent achievement and a real testament to the burgeoning talent visible throughout Renfrewshire South.”
