THE community has rallied around to raise cash for a cat that was tortured by cruel yobs.

The power of the internet had led to Leo, the short-haired tabby- receiving donations from residents across Barrhead and Neilston after he suffered cigarette burns to his ears and had his tail set alight earlier this month.

The horrific attack in Glen Avenue area of Neilston, caused to him to lose his tail and have half of his ear amputated.

Leo’s owner, Pauline Shields explained that his treatment has so far reached £2000.
And kind strangers have since set up a just giving page to help pay for his aftercare, which has reached over £1300.

She said: “Matt Drennan, from Neilston, posted about Leo online and people have all clubbed together to get a fundraiser set up for Cats Protection Giffnock Branch on Leo's behalf and the amount of love that this little man's being sent is amazing.

“The villagers have been amazing. I don't want anyone to think that this barbaric incident is something that is the norm here.

“I’m now raising awareness of animal cruelty because I can't let the pain that wee soul is suffering be in vein. People must become more aware and more vigilant with their own animals.

“An amazing woman, Kimberley Wilson Nicol, provided Leo with a fundraiser page. She has been a brilliant support and so has Leo's original rescuer, Karen Minnery who operates the Cat's Protection Giffnock Branch.

“She has been a massive support too and I don't know how I would have coped on an emotional level without her love and support for both myself. She has accompanied us to every veterinary appointment and I can't thank her enough.”

Animal lover, Lesley Roberts has also pledged to donate her wage to Leo’s cause.
