BARRHEAD’S MP hopes to find a ‘sensible centre ground’ following May’s Brexit deal defeat last night.

Paul Masterton had previously stated last week that he believed that Mrs May had “reached the best deal that could have been achieved”, adding the deal is a “compromise” but not the deal he wanted.

But following last night’s vote, the prime minister was defeated following her deal being backed by 202 MPs, but 432 voting against.

Mr Masterton says that he will 'fully support' Mrs May's efforts to 'forge a way forward'.

He said: “Last night the Governments deal was comprehensively rejected by a large group of MPs, who themselves disagree on a solution.

“The Prime Minister has said she will open discussions across the House to forge a way forward and I fully support her efforts.

“As I have been clear from the outset, whilst I believe it is important to deliver on the UK-wide result of the Brexit vote, I am not prepared to do so at any cost.

“It is clear that Parliament will not accept a No Deal Brexit, and my first priority will be to explore ways remove it as the current legal default outcome.

“My hope is that in the days ahead we can find a sensible centre ground and a solution which commands the support of a considerable majority of MPs, and people now need to focus their minds on what shape that might take.”
