Young people from across Europe have travelled to Barrhead to begin a year of working in East Renfrewshire’s schools.

Foreign language assistants from France and Spain travelled to the town on Friday to begin their work helping promote their countries’ cultures in schools across the local authority.

The group of six will remain in Scotland until next summer, travelling around as well as spending time in the classroom.

They will also be aided by council staff, one of whom arrived in Scotland in the same role a decade ago and now teaches in East Renfrewshire.

Schools hope the new staff, who will be based across the area, will combine learning about French and Spanish culture with learning their languages in the classroom.

Education officer Kerry Crichton said: “They really enhance the experience of modern languages and encourage pupils to travel. Seeing young people here could inspire them.”
