A TASTY community fun day took place in Neilston to highlight the work being done by local food growers.

The Super Salad Saturday event at Neilston Development Trust (NDT) attracted dozens of families from across East Renfrewshire to a showcase of fresh veggies, soft fruit and herbs.

All of the products used to teach and feed Saturday’s revellers were grown in community gardens across the local authority, including Barrhead and Neilston.

A selection of soups and desserts accompanied the salads created from the produce and were enjoyed by guests of all ages.

Pauline Gallacher, NDT chairperson, is keen to get the message across that food tastes better when you ‘grow your own.’

She said: “I’ve just picked my first ever strawberries after shoving them in the ground last year.

“If I can do it, anyone can.”

The event took place as part of the GET Local Project programme, funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund, which supports communities to adopt low carbon behaviours like producing their own food.

NDT and project partners Young Enterprise Scotland hope this has inspried people to dig out their gardening gear and have a try at growing their own.

As part of this, free cookery workshops, growing classes and cycling lessons will be offered.
