BARRHEAD Community Council has hit out at ‘disrespectful vandals’ who have damaged a monument in the centre of the town.
At a meeting last week community councillors raised the consistent vandalism to the the Barrhead Centre obelisk on Cochrane Street and called for repairs to be carried out.
The ornate glass at the top of the monument currently lies smashed, and the writing on the memorial is unreadable.
A spokeswoman for the community council said: “It is very upsetting to see the lack of respect that people have for their town and it’s about time this was cleaned up.
“We know that there are CCTV cameras so it should not be too difficult to find those responsible. “
An East Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “It is extremely disappointing that mindless vandals have damaged such an important memorial.
“Our warden’s service has also prioritised the area for the extra attention.”
“We would encourage residents to be vigilant when they’re in the area and if they spot anyone causing damage to the monument, call our ring and report line on 0800 013 0076.”
