EAST Renfrewshire's Member of Parliament has called on the UK government to revoke its state visit invitation to Donald Trump.

Kirsten Oswald MP raised her concerns over Prime Minister Theresa May's offer to the US President during a speech at Westminster.

There she asked the government to reconsider rewarding the "controversial" actions of President Trump's administration with a state visit later this year.

Pointing to a 41 per cent rise in hate crime in England and Wales post-Brexit, Ms Oswald insisted MPs must recognise the impact that anti-Muslim and anti-refugee rhetoric has on people if such language is given credence.

Several East Renfrewshire residents have contacted Ms Oswald's constituency office to express their reservations over the invitation.

Ms Oswald said: "I was pleased that I could speak on behalf of the people who were so concerned about this planned state visit.

"I am baffled that Theresa May thought that this was the right thing to do, so soon after President Trump came into office, and in the midst of such controversial words and actions from his administration.

"Seeking to ban Muslims and denying refuge to people fleeing from war and persecution is never acceptable. That is the message that should be coming from Downing Street.

"In the meantime, I hope that this visit does not go ahead as planned."

A petition to block the President's state visit has reached almost two million signatories.
