A road in Barrhead was closed in both directions as part of an investigation into the cause of a mystery explosion in the town.

Police Scotland are working with the fire service to establish what led to a blast that tore apart sports supplement store Muscle Junction on Saturday night.

The shop front was blown off after an explosion inside the store sent debris into the middle of Glasgow Road.

Emergency services raced to the scene shortly after 11pm on Saturday night and detectives scoured the area in a bid to discover the cause.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 11.10pm on Saturday, April 2, emergency services attended a report of an explosion at the premises of Muscle Junction, Glasgow Road, Barrhead.

“On arrival they discovered extensive damage to the front of the shop and fire service extinguished a small fire within.

“No-one was injured as a result of the incident and traffic diversions have been set up.

“Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will carry out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the explosion.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: "There has been an internal explosion, and we don't know why, and it has taken out the frontage of the shop.

"When we arrived we required two sets of breathing apparatus and a hose-reel to extinguish the blaze.

"We had two appliances - one from Barrhead and one from Pollock - at the scene.

"It was a very minor incident apart from the explosion.

"The incident is under investigation just now and out fire investigation team will be at the scene on Sunday.

"It will be a multi-agency investigation."
