CONTROVERSIAL plans for a giant mobile phone mast in Auchenback have been thrown out by planning chiefs. Residents, councillors and MPs had joined in the fight against Vodaphone and O2's application to build a 15 meter tall monopole on busy Aurs Road - more than twice the height of surrounding lamposts.
Planning officers had recommended approval of the plan, but councillors rejected the proposal amid fears the structure could distract motorists at the known accident blackspot.
Campaigner Barry O'Neil said: "I am delighted at the refusal on the grounds of road safety and now it means that we have a bit of hope for the future." However the Scottish Government could overturn the decision should the applicants appeal.
